Rising Above the Instinctual Subtypes: An Experiential Enneagram Retreat

Earthrise Retreat Center at IONS, Petaluma, California (north of San Francisco), USA

Co-led with Uranio Paes

Instincts and subtypes are an area of Enneagram theory that not much has been written about and in which different schools and teachers have different understandings and approaches. Above all, not much has been offered in terms of actual work on instincts and subtypes for development. Until now. Beatrice Chestnut and Uranio Paes decided to come together, drawing on their common vision and different backgrounds to provide this unique opportunity in an ambitious 5-day retreat.

Many people are becoming aware of the incredible clarifying power of Claudio Naranjo’s latest descriptions of the Enneagram’s subtypes. But while various people teach about the instincts and subtypes, there is often not a clear path to deeply understanding what they are, how they structure our everyday experience based on animal survival reactions, how they represent our most unconscious stage according to the process enneagram, and how to grow beyond their defensive (and thus restrictive) power.

Wisdom tradition tells us that it is in becoming aware of our animal nature and using the capacity for conscious reflection (we as humans uniquely have) that we develop the ability to routinely impose an inner witness and observe our instinctual reactions and our passions in action. This kind of inner work gives us the power to intervene to intercept automatic behavior (stimulated by the interaction of the dominant instinct and the lower emotional center) and transcend to a higher level of consciousness.

This retreat will support and encourage you in doing this inner work by providing the information, the experiences, the support, and the path to consciously rise above the habitual automatic reactivity of your personality.

This retreat offers an in-depth intensive experience of the six instinctual stances (the six possible ways in which the instincts can be “ordered”–previously called “stacking”) and the twenty-seven subtype personalities. Through both group and individual work, film clips, and the latest teachings on the instincts and subtypes, we will learn about this important dimension of the Enneagram model and support each other in understanding the ways in which our dominant, secondary, and repressed instincts drive our behavior. We will also gain insight into how our instincts combine with our passions and our type patterns to structure our experience.

The exploration of the ways our personalities act out our instinctual biases will culminate in participants identifying their specific growth challenges, working with them in real-time, and developing a sound plan for continuing inner work beyond the retreat. Supported by and generated through the group process, we will develop a clearer sense of the behavior connected to our internal instinctual dynamics and develop a visceral, emotional, and intellectual understanding about how our dominant instinct drives us, how our secondary instinct plays its role, and how our repressed instinct silently impacts us. And we will learn how our specific instinctual makeup gets expressed through the unique defensive patterns and strengths of our specific Enneagram type.

You will learn:

  • to recognize and understand defensive behavior driven by your instincts operating through your personality (sub)type patterns
  • to see how your passion and instinctual makeup operate as a unified system
  • to gain insight into how your passion combines with your instinctual needs to shape unconscious behavior
  • much more about the ways in which the 6 instinctual stances and the 27 subtypes manifest
  • to become more conscious of unconscious, instinct-driven behavior and how to intercept it
  • to compassionately support yourself in doing the work of seeing your animal nature and becoming more human through creating and receiving support around a plan for your self-work
